Our extended trip to South America will take us first to New York for a swift 2-night stay to see the sights (somewhat briefly) and indulge in a pancake or two. From there we will fly to Buenos Aires which we will be making our home for the whole of December, renting an apartment, taking a crash course in Spanish, attempting to live like the locals, while taking weekend trips to interesting places nearby (Igazu Falls, Rosario (Che Guevara's birthplace), Uruguay, etc. In early January, after we have experienced the New Year fireworks in Argentina's capital, we will head South through Argentina's Pampa region (bit like the outback where everyone seems to ride a horse and some of them are Welsh??), then on to Patagonia, famous for its stunning lakes and mountains.

Getting colder and colder (and thanking God that we are travelling in their Summer and not Winter by this time), we head to the ends of the earth as far South as you can get before falling off into Antarctica. We will stay here as long as we can before turning into ice blocks (probably about 2 hours in Mels' case) and will then cross over the border into Southern Chile and make our way North, taking a fjords cruise through the areas which cannot be navigated by road. We make our way up this long, thin country through the extraordinary "Lake District" and the Atacama Desert (the driest place on earth) and onto the Capital, Santiago.
Then, to Bolivia, the least developed of our destinations, through some of the bleakest terrain on earth - the salt flats of Uyuni and finally stopping for a rest at the stunning Lake Titicaca before crossing the border into Peru. Peru will be the major historical / cultural bit of the trip where we will visit the famous Inca Ruins of Macchu Picchu and many other sites such as the Nazca Lines and Ollantaytambo, allowing ourselves a well-earned week's rest on a teepee on the beach before leaving.
Our final Stage is Ecuador, renowned for being one of the leading eco-friendly countries in the world. We will endeavour to recycle and bio-compost our way around this country, stopping off at a fruit farm and several organic centres, eating beetroot and pineapples before ending up at a rejuvenation centre to get pampered before we think about getting back on a plane to come home. The whole trip - a bit longer than the average honeymoon - we hope to go for 6 months!
Ok, so this might be taken closer to home....Cornwall actually, but, as you can see, we were fully prepared for the "cold" thing
