The Proposal
Saturday November 5th, 2004
3pm
John goes shopping in Bristol town centre.
This is such a rarity that Mel instantaneously suspects something must be up.

4.30pm
John returns from shopping and locks himself in the spare room.
He does not emerge until an hour later.

5.30pm

John suggests that they leave home to be able to find a decent parking space on the Bristol Downs to walk to the local Fireworks display.
6.16pm
John produces a second wrapped present from his rucksack which is a box.  Mel opens it to find a blue and white rubber duck.  Mel thinks this is rather odd and wishes she had not chosen such a peculiar man to spend bonfire night with. Then Mel notices something odd about the duck.  There is a piece of string around its neck.  And at the end of the piece of string is a ring.  The fireworks are lighting up the sky overhead and everyone around them is gazing in delight. Mel simply looks at the ring and looks up at John.

John says "Melanie Johnson, will you marry me?".
6.15pm
The Fireworks display starts and half way through John opens his rucksack and presents Mel with a wrapped present.  Mel thinks this is somewhat strange, but opens it, and finds a DVD of the film Kill Bill. There is no explanation, but Mel remembers clearly that this is the first film they saw together. Still, it seems an odd time to be starting to give presents during a fireworks display. Mel notices that John has a glint in his eye and is still behaving in a nervous fashion.
6pm
John and Mel make their way past the dodgy burger vans and find their space right by the fence to view the firework display. John is carrying a rucksack, which he says has a spare jumper in it.  Mel thinks this is rather odd as John does not feel the cold and never brings a spare jumper anywhere.  John seems a little nervous, especially when questioned about his rucksack.
6.17pm
Mel forgives John for not getting down on one knee, as it is raining very hard.  John tells Mel the story of arranging to go to Compton one evening in July, 5 months earlier, to ask Carol and Steve for their permission for him to marry Mel. They had said yes and John then spent the next 5 months planning his proposal.  It was perfect (if a little unconventional).  There aren’t many couples out there who can say that their wedding proposal really did send fireworks (and rubber ducks) launching into the sky!
6.20pm
Mel starts the wedding plans!
