I may have been christened Melanie Sarah Johnson, but the many pet names I have been forced to endure over the years include “Bluey”, “Bluesey”, “Blueegeee”, “Smelly Melly” and “Stinker”. Personally, I prefer just plain "Mel" or, for the sake of my Mum, "Melanie".

People say I sound like a “posh Surrey-born lady”, and that is exactly what I am! Born in leafy Guildford in 1971 (yes, John is a toy-boy), we lived in Normandy (not the French version) for my very happy childhood years, shared with brother Steve, Mum and Dad and our lovely cats, Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men. With Mum looking as gorgeous as she did (see picture on right taken in the photo booth in Asda on a standard shopping trip for Mum), it came as no surprise that I turned into an internationally-renowned "alternative" Supermodel.
With the influence of my Dad as a musician and my ancestors on my Mother’s side being in the theatre, I suppose it was no surprise that what interested me in my childhood, teens and beyond, was a love of all things arty, particularly music, theatre, poetry and literature. I learned to play the piano (and the recorder, which is actually a very demanding instrument, you know), and although I attempt the guitar, I do have to admit that I am rubbish, often being likened to Phoebe from “Friends”.
I actually loved school (this is rare, I know) and relished study and learning and went on to become Head Girl of my school because obviously all the teachers loved me and I sucked up to them nicely. In the sixth form, I started getting more and more interested in the theatre, so I don’t think I shocked my parents too much when I said I wanted to go to Drama School to learn to act. That is what I did, had a wonderful 3 years there, and then went on the stage for the following 6 years.
Though I loved acting work, and had enjoyed stints in the West End and several top-class Repertory theatres, the draw of seeing the world enticed me to give up my job and backpack for a year with my cousin, Dee. We had the most incredible time away, visiting mainly Asia, but also Australia, New Zealand and Fiji (here we are on our own island that we rented for 10 days in Fiji……yes, we were on a backpacking budget)!
On return from my big trip, I learned a new trade and went into teaching English and Drama before heading back to London to get a "proper job" in Public Relations. Life then took me to Bristol and I continue in a proper job in Marketing with a mad bunch of Marketeers!
Here is my mad family - Mum, Brother Steve and Steve's fiance, the lovely Ann. This picture, I hope, goes some way to explaining how I ended up the way I did, as you can see my family are mad, so that is clearly where I get it from! This was taken at a corn maze near Mum's house on a daytrip outing we had in 2003. We got lost...... Very lost....but spirits remained high, as you can see.

For those of you who don't believe me, the picture to the left is of me and Elle Mcpherson-Whear on a Versace fashion shoot in 1993 on the launch of his "Alternative Clash Collection".
At 15, I balanced my airy-fairy artiness by taking up Karate and went on to become one of the only girls in the class who didn’t mind breaking their nails, progressing to be picked to represent England in the Wado Ryu Karate championships in Madrid in 1992. So, no messing with me on our wedding day if you don’t like the wine!
